this video basically demonstrates why i insist american football is an absolute pussy sport. weak punch, yet the guy hits the floor. they just need the pads, because they are a bunch of pussies who cannot take real contact. lame sport.

i still prefer soccer in all aspects. american football is just for people who cannot make friends in highschool, so they can join the team in hopes of becoming popular. it is definitely a pussy sport.

american football is just for people who cannot make friends in highschool, so they can join the team in hopes of becoming popular.

From what I gather from American TV and Films, it's the ones who play football who are the popular ones......but maybe not.

well, some of them are, but there's like 50+ players on most highschool football teams. over half of them aren't popular and started playing to try to become popular. american tv only portrays the lives of the 4 or 5 that are the popular ones.  most of them are lame, and think that if they play football, they will become popular since american culture likes it.

American Football is not a pussy sport. Give me all that shit about pads, helmets, etc. and still, if you get fucking drilled by a 240 lb. linebacker, and still tell me it is a pussy sport, then you have not played it. Soccer, as much as I love it, is a fucking pussy sport. It is my favorite sport next to MMA, but it is a "gentleman's game" and there is nothing wrong with that. But to try and say that soccer is more hardcore and 'tougher' than football, you have to be out your rabbit ass mind.

You watch soccer on tv, and as soon as someone gets hit, they fall on the ground and roll around like little bitches. In American football, you get fucking drilled and you get up and shit, no fouls. Soccer>Football, but football is a tougher sport.

Hook out.

if you put "tough" in terms of how much and often you get hit, sure. but if you put "tough" in terms of physical fitness, not a chance. albeit, there are incredible athletes like terrell owens, etc who are obviously physically fit. but it's obvious that a soccer player runs much much more, and in that aspect, the sport is very tough.

Oh yeah, absolutely. In terms of endurance and fitness, soccer is a much tougher sport, and I would even go as far as saying the amount of skill required to play is higher. I know a lot of people who can catch a ball extremely well and throw a ball far or use a lot of force in blocking people, but have yet to meet a lot of people who can shoot a ball upper 90 often with excellent form.

I meant in terms of overall toughness in getting hit-- taking a hit to the ribs or that whiplash you get everytime a linebacker is cracking you, there is no comparison in soccer other than a slide tackle to the legs, which is a foul.

As far as athleticism goes though, that is a tough one. Some of the fastest athletes with the best 40 yard times are in football, or who can jump the highest, and push the most weight. That should count for something as well.

well, american football does have alot of contact, but to say that soccer doesn't is extremely harsh. in soccer they just don't do rugby tackles and stuff.  it would make the game stupid if they did.  there are many hard hits in soccer from slide tackles, kicks, and more. the main reason soccer players hit the ground more is that they are hit in their legs which is easier to take someone of their feet. also the reason you don't see football players do this, is the whole point is to try not to be tackled. you also can't con a ref by going down in football, so that useless. the more contact in football is also done to a more sturdy part of the body than in soccer. its much easier to injure someone's leg than their torso. i've played both sports, but i didn't like football. it had too many stoppages, and too much specialization in positions.  i know what it feels like to be tackled, and in all honesty, the pads take most of the force from the blow. normally you don't even feel it. its definitely much more painful to get kicked in the shins than to be tackled.  soccer actually is probably a better sport to prepare someone for fighting as well.  it teaches you how to use your longest weapon to kick your opponent. where, football doesn't have quite as good of techniques for fights. the tackle really doesn't do much against someone who knows anything about fighting. it can be easily avoided by side stepping,, and it can be countered by a kick or jab.

like that? almost never. regular fights? not often. us sports associations don't play around with that shit. plus, 99% of the time it's pretty pointless beat a guy over the head when he has a helmet on

ahh BJJ is cool

I am in Shotokan Karate and Judo (although less Judo)

I'm considering taking up another art -- I do karate/judo (same dojo) twice a week, and I'm thinking about doing something else once per week

the most conveniently located dojos/gyms are muay thai, bjj, aikido, and hapkido

any recommendatons? (I'd also prefer not to get the hell beaten out of me, because my future depends on my head, and being punchdrunk is not conducive to academics -- that said, I don't mind taking a few hits, especially body ones)

no shit
but sustaining a number of punches to the head, specifically the temple, is never good for you
I'd rather have somewhat limited head contact and full body contact

I never said it was life-threatening or anything
all I said was that I'd rather stay away

hence it's parethese status in the original post -- it wasn't an overriding concern, just a preference
and you can't deny that getting punched in the head multiple times isn't GOOD
it may not be so bad, but it has no real positive effects unless you want to go into mma competition, which I don't want to do

If you have a decent piece of change, I would recommend taking both muay thai and bjj if possible. I know I haven't been exactly modest about the amount of money I have, but I will tell you right now I am spending about $400/mo on martial arts right now; but to be honest I suck. I get tapped out every single time I am there and have only tapped out 3 people ever, and they were all white belts. I get tapped out by white belts all the time as well. But I have noticed a major improvement, but I am starting muay thai as soon as my shoulder heals up.

Take them both, they can both be applied to the street.

I don't have the cash for that....nowhere close haha
I'd rather get me something of a ground game because I already have a very strong background in a striking art -- I've been a student of shotokan karate for 9 years and I plan to continue towards my black belt. I need to cram train before I go off for university, because the earlist age you can get a black belt in my dojo is 18. That said, I'm beating/getting the better of black belts a fair amount of the time, so i think it should come before I actually ship off at the end of next summer. I do have some judo, as my sensei is a blackbelt in it (some throwing, some jointlocks and submissions -- nothing advcanced), but my ground game is minimal, especially compared to the emphasis my training has put on striking.

So: I want ground game/throws/takedown defense. Muay thai would be interesting for a different approach to striking, but I think it would ultimately be the least worthwhile. For me, it's really between aikido (a defense-oriented art), hapkido (which I don't know all that much about), and bjj

Aikido is really fun, but if you want something that you can learn quickly its definitely not the right one, as it takes forever.
