USA and China have always been top of the mdeals in the Olympics haven't they? Russia too, right? I think it might have somthing to do with the size of their countries maybe? In the last Winter Olympics China got a whole lot more medals than Croatia did. But someone realized that Croatia had actually been more successful at the Games because a higher percentage of their atheletes gained medals. In other words Quality>Quantity.

winter olympics are very different to compare with. when someone mentions the olympics in general, they normally are referring to the summer olympics. the results in the winter games will always be different, because certain countries climates make it more possible for them to play these sports. its not exactly fair for a country like brasil, because it never gets gold enough.

this question is going to anger many but to be honest the matches against el salvador and trinidad and tobago are going to be very critical. if lets say usa loses both then they are going to be in a very tough position.
Most countries would love to play against El Salvador and Trinidad on the way to the World cup instead of their current opponents.
