Becoming a Pro Freestyler.. A career in freestyle.. is it worth it?? EDIT: Can you make a living out of it?
Discuss
-
if you enjoy it. or maybe you can just like busk for fun
-
umn i think its really hard to make a living out of freestyle, but it sure is worth it doing performances for money or busking. In Canada we have freestylesoccer.INC and we do shows for whatever big company and sure its fun getting girls attentions, crowds and getting paid on top of it but u it should always be a side thing. F3d is now in Canada and hes loving doing shows with us

A Career in Freestyle Football......
It is worth it if you can become very successful like Mr.Woo, or John Farnworth.
Its a very tough life, im sure everyone who has relied on Freestyle shows for their bread will understand and relate with me.
In my opinion, travelling around performing one off shows here and there is quite cool, but there can be no long term impact in my opinion, and I am actually sick of it!
There needs to be a long lasting effect on the kids/people who see your moves.
So thats why I hope to start my own Street Soccer/Freestyle classes and camps here in Ireland, just like we have done in USA !
Its defo the way forward!
-
its not only hard work you know....
i dont think anyone can deside to be a pro. u must have the tallent, and it must be fun to practice.
i dont think anyone did it just for the money. not even billy wingrov...
-
Not that I'm a even close to being a little bit professional or anything, but I really hate doing performances sometimes. For me it's mostly in the weekends, and then you miss some parties and stuff like that. I hate that! In those cases I only do those shows on those days for the money, cus i would rather be at the party :3some:
-
If you're lucky you're promoted alot and you get more shows. Then it's really great. But if you have few shows with small crowds it's probably not too nice.

Can you make a living out of freestyle then?
-
Can you make a living out of freestyle then?
Yes, quite unpredictable though, a lot of the time you dont know when your next paycheck will be.
That is probably the worst thing about Freestyle
-
I think it all depends on how much passion u have for freestyle. I am a very passionate freestyler but i also have other commitments, however i would like to promote it like t bagg said and have recently started my own freestyle academy in the southwest of England. :pimp:
-
I think freestyle gets bad when it becomes about money, recently i have started getting a bit pissed off and dissapointed about the lack of LP's and companies trying to screw you over, but i had to just take a step back and see what my priority is in Freestyle
1 - Improve as a fser
2 - Enjoy FS
3 - Go to meets
4 - Make cash
so i guess its not that big a deal for me at this moment in time
-
actually if you live alone , its 80% impossible
you need the help of your parents and etc......
i had 5 wonderful months well paid, but now im in the hole.....
Thanks God im living with my parents :P
-
its possible to live of freestyle for sure , i have been doing it for years
-
To be sucesfull in freestyle, I would say its 10% skill, 90% contacts.
-
You know when you do live performances, do you ring up businesses and other contacts and ask for work? Or do you wait around and wait for them to contact you somehow?
-

Most freestylers who has a lot of lps are emailing every company they can possible find

anyway, if you want to freestyle just because you want a career and making money you shouldnt do it... then you can go to walmart and sit on your fat ass instead

Ahhh cmon now Gustav, you know what were talking about here....JF makes vids sometimes yeah, but how can he be categorised as a video freestyler when he gets as many LP's as U2 ?
Video Freestyler = all these guys that we cant remember their names that make new videos every 2nd week and what not....
-
And further more, I dont see how LP Freestylers such as, Séan/Dan Magness/JF and Nam have "no skill or very little" compared to Video Freestylers...
Your having a fucking laugh here Sweden.

Dude, you try too hard to look cool.
Stay on topic and explain your posts....nice

I havn't been freestyling for 9 years so no thanks
You wanna compare sit downs, lowers, uppers? Go outside practice instead of posting here you are making a fool out of yourself, bloody hell even the largest retard in ireland aka dan the man is putting you to shame by surpassing you in all styles and he has been freestyling for a year
-
Haha nice man, your a little child still.
So cmon, explain your theory behind you (video freestyler) being better than an LP Freestyler?

1st - I would say Tiernan has more
2nd - I would say Tiernan has more (hair than you)
3rd - I would say Tiernan has more (Talent in LPs)
4th - Tiernan rapes you in aircombos
-
The floor is yours Mr.Cherek
-
Me > tiernan in all freestyle aspects
-
Me > tiernan in all freestyle aspects
How about style/charisma/flow and variety?
Still beat me in all aspects??
So oLi, once more...how do LP Freestylers have little or no skill?
-
you set 1 combo for us both to do and we can see which looks the best then I set 1

Just our of curiosity, are you talking about air combos?
Coz if its just a "Combo" that means anything goes right?
I will admit Air moves aint my talent, but if its general freestyle and putting together a combo, you are fucked, proper fucked.

Agreed! Your amatws sucks so fucking hard oli, and when are you supposed to learn new shit? :dontknow:
-
Ok no problem Gustav, lets agree to disagree, seperate opinions.
But even doe you did still mention Dan Magness as an LP Freestyler, and he is one of the most technical stylers out there, so I still dont get how he has none, or little skill....that i will not agree on.
-
Abdellah is the master of freestyle street performace !!!! 20years
-
When I saw the thread and saw you had the last post, I had a funny feeling you'd say something about Abdellah, whoever he is. :dontknow:
I don't believe you can make a DECENT living off doing peformances. Maybe a living yes, but you're going to have to rely on a steady flow of high paying opportunities if you want to be able to afford things like a car, house, paying the bills etc.
For the kids on this forum who want to do it full time, focus on something more realisic.

Why isnt a career in freestyle realistic...?
-
If you dont believe, you wont achieve
-
If you don't think realistically, your fucked.
-
If you don't think realistically, your fucked.
who said so?
people who always think realisticly and never think outside the box are the boring 9 to 5 guys in offices all over the world
I'd rather be a pro freestyler struggling to pay the bills than to be a middle-class office worker or builder
think big is what i would say, if you aim high but you dont make it, at least you tried unlike the "realistic thinkers"
-
Yo Jay.T, you havent lived a career in Freestyler, so you cant comment.
Its tough going trying to pay bills from freestyle shows, but in my opinion far more rewarding than all the goons working in office jobs that they hate just because society pressures them into "being realistic".
Dont conform to society, take a fucking chance...thats my advice to anyone here who thinks they got a shot at being pro...no matter the sport.
-
I'd like to make the point that, if you want to have a family, wife, kids etc, would you still be willing to Freestyle and struggle to pay the bills because its "rewarding", or would you rather put your familys health and wellbeing first.
-

Ok now your getting carried away, that is silly.
But there are freestylers who have families and still make a living out of Freestyle.
Its okay when your young if your "struggling" with Freestyle as a career...but at a certain stage if its not working out, you have to make the decision of whether its worth it.

I agree. I'm just saying you need a backup plan if Freestyle doesn't workout, instead of putting everything into it and having nothing left at the end.
When a young kid decides to leave school early to become a professional Freestyler, you know somethings wrong.
-
i cant believe that some of you think that freestylers such as dan magness or sean have no skill.... dan magness can do sits while doing a topheadstall... the only one besides dan is KHB who can do this.
but yeah i would like to see a battle between Tiernan and oLi. an unedited battle.

It seems from all your comments.. becoming a pro isnt worth the risk..?

Performing around the world, inspiring kids through your passion seems to me like its worth it :pimp:

hahaha that was like a death sentence to oLi
-
I find this discussion rather useless. I think i can have an opinion here since i have been a fulltime professional for years (i dont live with my mother and i pay my own bills of freestyle all year round)
Being a pro has something to do with skills offcourse, but like stated offcourse not everything. Its a mix between many things.
- talent
- social skills (good talker)
- luck
- meeting the right people
- age (alot of companies only take people that are older)
- know how to run a business (paper work like handling invoices, taxes visas etc etc)
- reliable as a worker (show up on time, work hard )
but the most important thing is ...giving up everything else besides freestyle. There is no time for hobbies and its even hard to meet your friends alot since you are travelling constantly. This is a thing you have to be willing to do .....and by far the hardest challenge (for me at least) as a pro sporter.
edit
as far as the video / lp discussion. I dont think that matters ...a good freestyler is good on video and on lp (btw ..i am not saying i am any of those)
-

one of very few posts in this topic that makes sense. the social skills and business part is especially important tho. good networking is key.
and just for the record, yes it is possible to make a DECENT living off freestyle. Steve Elias does it. i'm sure others too.
-
Do you just live of LPS?
-
Do you just live of LPS?
You know from what I seen from your posts you just seem concerned about how much money you can make from freestyle and all you want to do is learn a few tricks and make some cash.
Well let me tell you that you are wasting your time. I am sure 95 percent of good freestylers never even thought about making money when they were first trying atw.

Those guys who are "boring 9 to 5 in offices around the world" can actually make more money than a pro freestyler do. In fact, if you get a little bit nice job that that like a doctor for instance, you won't be living in an exciting life, but still earn lots and lots more money than being a pro freestyler.
But the point I'm trying to make here is not that you can't live out of freestyle, it just that if you want to live to be a pro in anythang, for example a pro freestyler, accept both its pros and cons. For example you must accept that you won't be earning as much and as consistent amount of money, also the lack of time to visit your close ones... etc... , but you can enjoy travelling around the world and inspire many people. Accept both pros and cons and don't think about money. If you think about the money, try to be a CEO instead.
-
With Freestyle being such a young sport at the moment it is very hard unless you do alot of LP's to make a proper income (ie house, car etc) from the sport, as endorsement deals are where the big money is at and we probably wont be at that stage for a few years yet.
We have been going for just on 8 months now and have 1 Full Time Freestyler and hopefully by the end of this month we will make that two, but that is after alot of hard work in booking over 80 LPs, having the right image, talented freestylers and getting the right contacts which only a person in business working 24/7 for freestyle can do.
I think a few more people will be able to make it as a pro in the next 12 months (from different countries) if everything goes according to plan.
-
good point paul
i see where u are coming from
it must be very difficult to become professional
u have to have lots of contacts, charisma, style and personality
otherwise your screwed
and you have to be prepared to live the fs lifestyle
-
I think it is possible to do Freestyle full-time of course. I think the best way to get on that road is to have a part-time job and then do Freestyle part-time until it takes off. When it takes off for you then you start travelling and get more and more into it. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
