Is Arsenal running out of steam?
Date Submitted: 2008-04-07
After a winless streak, a desperate glim of hope struck The Gunners as they prevailed at Bolton having been down two goals at half-time. After the Bolton match they had a terrible result against Liverpool, who they face again this weekend, and once again next week. That may be too much for Arsenal. The Gunners have Eduardo, Rosicky and Sagna sidelined all by injuries, and when they face a tough situation, they have to seek the services of Walcott and Bendtner, both who are not ready for top level football.
Walcott is the better player and shows glimpses of brilliance and raw quality from time to time, whilst Bendtner scores sometimes, but obviously lacks in technique and coolness, two very important factors for a striker. Of course, evidence provides my best argument, where Bendtner saved Liverpool from conceding at the Emirates – a moment in which he was supposed to score. When your backup striker acts better as a defender, you have something to worry about.
And that's the case with Arsené Wenger. Having been offered a good amount to spend this season, he appeared reluctant to do so, and his team still lacks depth. He signed two players, Sagna and Eduardo. Two good signings, but both injured, and now he has the same players he had last year. The same players that have been battling week in and week out for results, and ultimately, the same tired legs. If Arsenal had to play a weak Cup game, they would have to field the same strong team they would field in the Premier League. Towards the end of the season, physical prowess tells a lot, and Wenger's men are surely lacking in that department.
It's hard to write them off with all the quality they possess, but it's hard not to see them faltering towards the end of this season. Liverpool has plenty of quality on their bench, whilst Wenger has to bring the same guys he always does to change the course of the game.
The problem is, the Arsenal substitutes hardly turn a game around anymore.
