Champions League: Liverpool vs. Arsenal 4-2
Date Submitted: 2008-04-12
Mayhem at Anfield
Liverpool 4 vs Arsenal 2
Liverpool advances on a 5-3 aggregate score in what will surely be remembered as one of the greatest two leg series' in Champion's League history. The 'Spanish Red' of Rafa Benitez advance to the semifinals of this year's Champions League after re-claiming the lead from a courageous Arsenal side only 7 minutes from the end.
The game started out at a furious pace with an electrifying Arsenal team. The fruits of the labor paid off after Abu Diaby destroyed Reina's near post with a hard low shot 12 minutes into the game. Liverpool, seemingly incapable of dealing with Arsenal's frenetic pace, looked set to lose the match, but on the 29th minute Sammy Hyppia would send Anfield into raptures with a magnificent header from a corner kick.
The game would remain a constant tug of war with two teams resolved to attack and win the game. The match progressed in this manner well into the second half. The final 30 minutes will forever be remembered as some of the best football ever played. In the 69th minute, Liverpool's new sensation Fernando Torres sent Anfield into delirium with a well controlled and powerful shot off the turn. But the joy would not last long thanks to a magical run, reminiscent of Diego Maradona's, by Walcott who then provided a magical pass to Adebayor who then put the Gunners ahead with only 7 minutes left in the game.
To the dismay of thousands in attendance the game looked like it was over despite Liverpool playing an incredible match. The score got shook up once more when a controversial penalty was called on Ryan Babel in the 85th minute. This call sent the great captain, Steven Gerrard, to the spot to give him the opportunity to close the business for Liverpool. Calm and collected, Gerrard placed a hard shot to the right of Almunia to give Liverpool a lead they would never relinquish again. With Arsenal left soulless and deflated, Ryan Babel picked out a long ball in injury time and sentenced the match in Liverpool's favor.
One of the great chapters of European football is now over.
